The U18 and U22 Canadian National Teams will be chosen from these camps and will attend the Canada USA Series to be held August 18 - 21st in Toronto. May 15, 2010 Last week the Stoney Creek Girls Hockey Association (SCGHA) was honoured at
the City of Hamilton's 24th Annual Sport Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. The SCGHA
was the recipient of the inaugural Dr. Gene Sutton Award.
"It is very difficult not to feel truly humbled by such a recognition of Dr.
Sutton's legacy," said Tammie Weston, President, SCGHA. "Also humbling is that
of all the volunteer driven youth sports organizations (promoting healthy living and
an active lifestyle) that were nominated in the Greater Hamilton area, the selection
committee chose the SCGHA. It has truly been a team effort to deliver this calibre
of programming to our membership."
And indeed the SCGHA has delivered a program of the highest calibre. Over the past ten
years the Stoney Creek Junior Sabres have graduated 64 young women to CIS (33) and NCAA
(31) hockey programs. Among the numerous notable alumni are Samantha Poyton (Cathedral
High School/Wayne State University), Kate Psota (Aldershot High School/Wilfrid Laurier University),
Laura Fortino (Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School/Cornell University) and
Beth Clause (St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic High School/Brock University).
This year's graduating class includes Sabres captain Arielle O'Neill who has accepted
a full scholarship to the University of New Hampshire. "The Sabres organization is so
special because everyone there truly cares about us not only as hockey players, but
also as people, said the 17 year old St. Catharines Governor Simcoe student. "Playing
for this organization was an unforgettable experience. The time and effort the coaches put
in is remarkable. With the help of the whole coaching staff our team felt like a big family."
Rebecca Smyth who will be attending Dalhousie University this fall echoes O'Neill's voice. "I
have gotten to know many great people in the Sabres organization, but what makes it so special
is being part of a second family. It's great to have an organization that is so supportive."
Added the 18 year old St. Michael's (Niagara Falls) Catholic Secondary student, "It's really
a bittersweet kind of feeling because so many of us are moving on. We will all be so far apart, but
at the same time it's exciting to see how well each of us will do at the next level."
Stacey Marnoch, coach of the Sabres praised both young women. "Arielle is a great kid.
A smart player (captain) with great skills who isn't afraid to go into the corners.
And Becca is a character kid who leads even though she may not have a letter on her jersey.
A gritty player who makes those around her better."
Eight other Sabre graduates will join the university ranks in the fall. Dallas Boyd,
a Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary student, Melanie Desrochers, Jean P. Vanier Secondary
School (Welland) and Hagersville's Rylee Smith will team up with former Sabre mates
Kelly Sabatine and Kayla Sullivan at St. Lawrence University in Canton NY; Aldershot
High School student, Jennifer Crawford will skate for State University of New York (SUNY)
at Potsdam, NY; Brantford's St. John's College, Jenesica Drinkwater will tend goal for
the University of Syracuse Orangeman; Kelly McDonald, a Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary
alum will take her game to the University of Maine; Shelby Wignall, a St. Thomas More
Knight will head to Hamden, Connecticut to play for the Quinnipiac University Bobcats;
and Kelli Gruhl, a St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic Secondary School scholar will stickhandle
down the 401 and suit up for Queen's University.
Graduates worthy of recognition. While Dundas celebrates Hockeyville, Stoney Creek celebrates Sabreville.
